Best Kinloch Rannoch walks

Kinloch Rannoch Nature Trail

For a short walk to help you get acquainted with the village, the Kinloch Rannoch Nature Trail is ideal. Taking around an hour and covering just over two-miles, the circular route gives you a glimpse of the different aspects of Kinloch Rannoch. The trail begins in the village square, taking you past a waterfall and a well to Loch Rannoch. From the loch, head past the hydro-power plant to head into the woods. The woodland trail starts to follow the river taking you back into the village.

The Forest Walk

For a longer walk, but still having clearly marked paths and tracks, the Loch Rannoch Forest walk is ideal. Many start this walk in the Loch Rannoch Forest car park. Taking around two hours to complete, the walk is relatively easy but makes to most of the beautiful views of the loch and a fascinating trail through ancient woodland. On the walk, people can see waterfalls and native woodland. There are also picnic tables available as well as a shelter, just in case the Kinloch Rannoch weather takes a turn for the worst.

MacGregor’s Cave

Just a short distance from Kinloch Rannoch is MacGregor’s Cave, a site of historical importance. It was here that outlawed clan members hid. In Victorian times, the cave was improved to be a perfect place to take guests, making it ideal for picnics and walks. The walk in just over three miles long and provides beautiful views of Dunalasdair Water, the River Tummel and Loch Rannoch.

Hill Walking Around Kinloch Rannoch

If you want to visit the Scottish Highlands to experience the beautiful moors and mountains, then Kinloch Rannoch makes an ideal base for many nearby mountain and hill walking trails. In fact, Kinnoch Rannoch has 26 Munros including Schiehallion, the highest of the 26 and the 57th tallest mountain in Scotland. While the Kinnoch Rannoch weather may vary, you can guarantee incredible views from whichever highland trail that you take.

Best Hill Walks Near Kinloch Rannoch

Craig Varr

From the village of Kinloch Rannoch, Craig Varr is easily identifiable. It is a short, steep walk and promises impressive views of the loch and landscape from the top. Taking around two hours to complete over a trail just shy of 3 miles, you can walk through the pretty village into a steep woodland section until you reach craggy upland. The summit has a cairn as well as a smattering of trees which may be handy for shelter in the unpredictable Kinloch Rannoch weather.

Shiehallion

A popular Munro to ‘bag’ Schiehallion has an altitude of 1083 metres, however, is quite an easy climb thanks to its well-maintained footpath. The trail is approximately 10km long with an ascent of 731. The trail starts at Braes of Foss car park and climbs along a comfortable path offering great views of Loch Tummel. On a clear day, the views from the summit can be extensive.

Carn Mairg

Carn Mairg is another Munro, with an altitude of 1042 metres. While it can be climbed alone, walkers will often make a long walk covering the three neighbouring Munros; Carn Gorm, Meall Garbh and Creag Mhor. The trail begins at the car park in Invervar and is an 11-mile route taking around eight hours to complete. The walk features spectacular views of the Invervar Glen and Loch Rannoch.
