Fishing is a popular outdoor pursuit in Perthshire, and Kinloch Rannoch is an ideal base location to get to some of the favourite fishing hotspots. In many cases, you must have a permit to fish, but once obtained there is an abundance of brown trout, pike, grayling and even salmon to catch making for a great sport. Permits are usually easy to get hold of, with many local shops, hotels and angling clubs offering the chance to purchase a pass.

Dunalastair Water

The Dunalastair Water is an attractive place to fish and is ideal for those focused on trout fishing. While it is illegal to fish from the bank of the loch, the estate does permit electric outboards. The estate also does not yet allow pike or salmon fishing. The water is shallow and calm and has plenty of insects which the trout make the most of. The best time to fish on these waters is from the middle of March until early October.

Loch Rannoch

This loch is famous for its Ferox trout. The carnivorous brown trout are monster-sized. Fishing here, you may be lucky to catch a fish weighing 20lbs or more. Around the loch, there are many boats for hire as well as clubs to give you expert tuition. Loch Rannoch is a beautiful and challenging fishing location. Out on the water, you can admire the mountains to the north and the south and the tranquil woodland banks.

Loch Errochty

Pike and Perch fishing is a popular pursuit on Loch Errochty. The manmade water body offers impressive views as well as sizeable fish that makes coarse fishing a favourite recreational activity. Being 5km long, the loch is a vast area to take a boat and fish from. The loch does have a fish ladder, so there is no salmon present.
