Winter in Rannoch

While the days are short and the weather may be less than pleasant for lots of outside activities, there are still lots of things to see and places to explore indoors, in case the weather does turn foul.

Clan Donnachaidh Museum

The museum in Pitlochry allows you to explore the history of the local Roberston clan. The clan has links spread worldwide, and you can see if you have links to the clan through their DNA project. Just near the museum are the Falls of Bruar which you can view by walking the wooded path and stone bridge.

Blair Atholl Country Life Museum

This family-friendly museum allows you to explore what life was like in the village over the years. There is a range of activities aimed at children making this a great stop for families.

Dunkeld Cathedral

Dunkeld Cathedral is a lovely little cathedral to visit. It is settled in the heart of Dunkeld and is open to visitors, allowing for normal services and ceremonies. Within the cathedral, you can find the Chapter House Museum. The museum was built in 1457 and tells the history of the local area. The museum tells the stories of several local notable figures, including Sir Donald Currie and Beatrice Potter.

Whiskey Tasting

There are a number of distilleries in the area which are worth a visit. After all, what is a trip to Scotland without a warming dram of whiskey?

Blair Athol Distillery – The distillery is located in Pitlochry, just in the foothills of the Grampian mountains. It is the water that flows from these mountains that are used to make the whiskey and is credited with giving it a smooth and mellow finish. There is a range of different tours available. The most basic tour is followed by a dram of single malt. For the dedicated aficionado, there is a full-day experience, which includes lunch with the operator as well as an extensive tasting.

Eradour – The Eradour distillery is world-famous. It is known for being one of the smallest traditionally run distilleries in Scotland. A visit to the distillery gives you the chance to see the whiskey being made. You can enjoy one of a number of guided tours. Why not round out your visit with a stop at the tasting bar where you can sample the range of single malts the distillery produces.
