Local Transport

Kinloch Rannoch is a rural village, and as such there are not extensive public transport links. In order to fully enjoy the remote area, you need to either plan your day around the buses and trains or you will need to be prepared to drive or cycle in order to get around.

There is a dial-a-bus service that runs in the area. It is basically a pre-bookable bus/taxi service. This is instead of the old regular bus service that used to operate in the area. The cost of the service is comparable to a standard bus, and you pay based on the mileage travelled.

Regular bus between Kinloch Rannoch and Pitlochry

There is a regular bus between Kinloch Rannoch and Pitlochry. The bus only runs a few times a day. So it would help if you made sure to plan your day so that you don’t miss it. The trip on the number 82 takes around an hour.

If you don’t want to drive into the area, then you can get a train. The nearest stations are into Rannoch or Pitlochry. You will need to book the dial-a-bus service to get from the station to the village.

Rannoch station is famous despite its remote location. It has been used in as a filming location in a large number of films, including Harry Potter and Trainspotting. If you have a little bit of time to spare there is a lovely cafe on the platform of the station. The cafe supplies locally sourced food. If you call them in advance they can even provide you with packed lunches to take with you on your day trip. The cafe is even dog-friendly.

The most convenient option is to drive into Kinloch Rannoch and be prepared to drive on small, local roads. The country roads in the area are in several places only single track. On these roads, you can travel both ways, but there is no space to pass other vehicles easily. This means you need to keep an eye out for passing places and drive with care. It is essential to keep an eye out for cyclists, hikers and horse riders.
